the obama administration. the food stamp participation rate has risen by more than 13 million people. every single month of this year additional members, folks moving on to the roles of food stamps. it has become more expensive to run as well. in 2000 the food stamp program cost just under $1,000 per person. today the number has soared to $1,700 a person, 68 percent increase, double the rate of inflation. poverty rates continued arise. housing and urban development estimating there were 250-350000 people homeless on a typical night back at the end of 1983. this compares with an estimated 636,000 homeless at the end of last year going into the fourth year of the president's presidency. just think of all this expansion, all of the spending, the federal government over the course of almost three decades. it's what president ronald reagan promised to take on and rivers more than three decades ago. >> we are a nation that has the government cannot the other way around. and this makes as special among the nations of europe. our government has no power, except that granted it by the people. it is

cuts, the obama administration has finally allowed the pentagon to start planning how to implement them. the white house had steadfastly argued it was a waste of time to plan for cuts that might never happen. but with negotiations appearing to be stalled and doubtless to pressure them, the administration has cleared government departments to start preparing. the administration says the pentagon has little flexibility and that the budget control act calls for uniform cuts to every program, project or activity to total about $5 hundred billion. -- $500 billion. given the. has exempted military personnel, cuts of about 9% would hit programs, operations, civilians and benefits over the coming ten years. it's the abruptness and the thoughtlessness ever the cuts that make them problematic. the pentagon can cut more. it just needs more time and less mindless rules to do so. could sequestration still be avoided? yes, lawmakers could strike a deal at the last minute to keep it from happening or stop it shortly after it takes effect. but no matter what happens with sequestration, d.o.d. should us

-nook swooped in to acquire nexen for a cool $15 billion. note to the obama administration, it is not happening in a bubble. last year you'll recall the obama administration put off a decision on the excel pipeline, an extension of a pipeline that would connect the oil in alberta to the gulf of mexico and international markets. the democrats killed it because of concerns from environmentalists. the proposed route crossed the aquifer in nebraska and white house and state department officials could have just insisted on rerouting the pipe, but they didn't. a bad move, one that was highly thought to play to the president's base. now that the elections are over, a review of a new route will begin sometime next year. the leakages of that pipe were a minor concern, though it got all the headlines. a more legitimate environmental concern is carbon emissions. processing crude that is mined from the oil sands emits double the emissions of regular drilled oil. but oil sands still -- that still scarce, oil is still scarce, the chinese lead lots of it, and the canadians have lots of it. president obama cam
